🍄 Fungal Foray 🍄

October 2024

8 members of the Wildlife Group and 7 members of the Grampian Fungus Group held a joint field meeting to look at the fungi growing in the pine woods around the Bennachie Visitor Centre. We were led by Toni Watt who leads the GFG, with input from other members of GFG who also had a good level of expertise. There was so much to find that it took us nearly half an hour to leave the woodland patches dividing up the car park. Furthermore, over the course of about 4 hours, we will only have covered about half a mile. We seemed to find a new species every few metres. In total we identified 53 species. The photo below gives an idea of the range of species.

Having had such a successful event this year, as well as last, we plan to hold a similar one in the autumn of 2025 - so look out for the advert nearer the time.

The basket image shows a small sample of what was found

The image with the cross section shows Snake-tongued truffle club and false truffle (cut in half). The black club-shaped sporing body with yellow stem parasitises a false truffle which grows under the soil.

The image with clover shows Stinking earthfan, looking like a small grey coral growing amongst grass.

The horizontal toadstool is a Tawny grissette – striated fringe to the bright brown cap, white stem with open sack at the base.
