Five Year Old Ethan Wins Jock o' Bennachie Competition

September 2020

Five year old Ethan Podmore-Mills was inspired by the Bailies of Bennachie’s new online learning resources to go out and discover nature on the hill. He was very excited to hear that his photographs of amphibians and caterpillars at the pond on Bennachie had won the Jock o' Bennachie summer competition. He was presented with his prize by Bailies Trustee and learning officer, Margaret Garden. Ethan said "I call Bennachie, ‘my mountain’ and love exploring it. Bugs are great; ants are my favourite but I also like newts and dragon flies."

His mother, Sarah said,

“We found the resources on the Bailies web site excellent, especially during lockdown. I printed out some of them to use outside and it encouraged us to go out and do our own bug hunts and exploring.”

The Bailies have used Bennachie’s gentle giant Jock o' Bennachie as the mascot for the online programme. He helps primary age children explore the natural world indoors and out with sections looking at birds, things that grown and mini beasts. The programme is accessible for primary aged children and fun, bringing together the best of the web with local facts, activities and even jokes.

Margaret Garden said:

“It was great to meet Sarah and Ethan and find out how they have used the resources on our web site. The competition has now closed but all the information and activities are still online at www.juniorbailies.org.uk. With the October holidays coming up we hope other families will use these resources and be inspired to go out and explore the natural world.”
