Bailies of Bennachie Awarded Grant for “Jock” Stories

January 2021

The Bailies of Bennachie are delighted to have been awarded a grant for online storytelling as part of ‘Jock O Bennachie’ fun and learning resources. The Doric Board gave the grant to the project for its ability to inspire the next generation of Doric speakers.

The Bailies Learning officer, Margaret Garden said:

“Story telling is an important part of our online learning with tales from Jackie Ross playing an important role in our package of information and activities for primary school children. Her lively stories told in Doric tell tales about the friendly giant ‘Jock O Bennachie’ and his animal friends who live on the hill. The stories such as “How Jock’s Friends Saved the Sun” and “Jock’s Autumn Party” have been a big hit with teachers, children and their families.”

“This grant is a real boost which will help us create more Jock stories with environmental messages bringing in the geography/landscape of Bennachie and looking at the history and culture on people who have lived on the hill. We are working with teachers and the council to deliver this programme, including more Doric storytelling, which brings Bennachie to life in a fun and accessible way.”

The fun and learning programme is available on the Bailies website at www.juniorbailies.org.uk. As well as story telling the resources contain ideas for outdoor and inside activities and loads of information about the natural world in winter, autumn and summer. They use Bennachie as inspiration for learning about life on the hill.

Margaret Garden added:

“With schools being shut and teachers and parents home teaching, access to these kind of resources are more important than ever. We hope that families will find them a useful source of information and ideas – as well as entertaining stories.”
