The Big Summer Dig
July 2024
Bailies of Bennachie Pittodrie 'Big Dig'
Our annual summer archaeology dig started this week on the Bennachie hillside.
New trenches have been opened up with new features beginning to appear and our volunteers were excited to find pottery shards, glass of various types/colour, clinker and coal.
The vegetation over the walls of the building in trench 1 was cleared before the trench was extended eastwards in the hope of uncovering more of the features that emerged during our 2022 season. We were delighted to find that the east side of the building wall survives.
A new trench was opened on the opposite side of the Craigwell Burn to uncover, what appears to be, a revetment dyke that may possibly be associated with the building. Work continues on the mound with further evidence of burning that may be associated with the 17th-century kilns or 19th-century landscaping of the site. We shall find out in due course!
In another new trench, a stone feature within the boggy area downhill from the Craig Well is proving interesting - watch this space!
