The Big Summer Dig - week 6
October 2024
📸 Trench 21 Andrew W working in the rain, standing in a bog, with the water from Craigwell Burn ever rising closer - but nothing stands in the way of this geologist/archaeologist in pursuit of knowledge! (and this trench is proving to be very interesting!)Â
📸 Today's team basking in beautiful sunshine, enjoying the lunch break and engaging with the frequent inquisitive visitors, interested in our work and our latest discoveries.
📸 Megan has found her forte in doing archaeological drawings and attracts admiration from all! The section drawing here is at 1:10 scale with measurements being taken along the horizontal plane using a tape measure. The vertical plane is measured from a horizontal string that has been tied-in to the site level's datum using a Dumpy level. Slowly and carefully the drawing is built up. The method practiced here is particularly important to highlight and record features that otherwise would be lost in a confusion of detail were photography used alone.Â
📸 Trench 22 Matthew assembling a 1x1m square drawing frame that is generally used in 1:20 scale plan drawings. Once a plan has been drawn, it allows a means of recording heights ('levels') to generate a 3-dimensional record of a feature.
