The Big Summer Dig 2024 - week 3
August 2024
The Archaeology Big Dig 2024 highlights and pictures from week 3 - July 31st & August 1st
Megan setting up and using a Dumpy level. (Megan image top right)
Trench 21 - (The Pittodrie 'bog'). David and Matthew watching as more pieces of a wooden feature are being uncovered by Andrew. The feature stands at the edge of a boggy area and may relate to the development of this area of wet ground. Fallen stones may also derive from the structure. (portrait style, middle right)
Trench 22 - (The Pittodrie 'bog') Matthew has now begun his own trench a short distance downstream from trench 21 looking at a lower feature that may be associated with the upper wooden one. (Matthew bottom right)
Trench 23 - (Stone dyke north of the Craigwell Burn opposite the building platform in trench 1). Mark uncovering more of the stones that appear to have fallen from the dyke. The significance here is not the stones themselves, but the way they show the old ground level at the time the dyke was partially removed. The depth of soil on the uphill side suggests that this was a free-standing garden dyke, rather than a revetment wall as first thought. (landscape style bottom left, Mark kneeling, Colin standing)
Trench 10 - Stone feature appearing. The measuring scales are of 1cm increments and a 'north' arrow shows the structure's orientation and photographer's angle of view. (landscape style bottom right - red arrow IMAGE TO BE INSERTED IN FOOTER)
