The Bailies of Bennachie are carrying out an archaeological dig this summer on the slopes of Bennachie. They are excavating a series of mysterious landscape features near Pittodrie House Hotel. It is the fourth time the group have delved into this rich area which has yielded finds from prehistoric and medieval times, including an unusual engraving that may date from the Neolithic.
The team are excavating trenches and uncovering structures and artefacts that offer clues about the people who have lived on the slopes of Bennachie through the centuries. The excavations are carried out by volunteers from the Bennachie Landscapes Project Fieldwork Group under the watchful eye of archaeologist Iain Ralston. The excavations take place on two days a week throughout July and August and there are still spaces for more volunteers.
