New Anti Litter Campaign Launched for Bennachie

March 2021

The conservation charity, the Bailies of Bennachie, is revitalizing its efforts with a new campaign to combat rubbish being left on the hillside. It is being spearheaded by Bailies Trustee, Alex Doig. He explained:

“Bennachie has experienced greater numbers of people visiting the hill during the last year. It is great to see that more visitors are enjoying this beautiful space but sadly it has also led to more rubbish being scattered beside and on the paths. Discarded glass bottles, tin cans, plastics, paper and dog waste is commonly found lying around. This is an increasing threat to wildlife and a significant source of frustration for those who are behaving responsibly and who expect a clean and safe environment to enjoy during their visit.”

“Visitor numbers and pressure is anticipated to rise further once current travel restrictions are lifted, so this is a critical time to re-focus our efforts on reducing the trend. We intend to work with local authorities, the Bennachie Visitor Centre, the Keep Scotland Beautiful charity, Visit Scotland, local schools and the public over the next few weeks on several initiatives, designed to raise awareness and help clear up the hillside.”

“Most people do behave responsibly, we hope that this campaign will gather support, attract attention and raise awareness of the problem for those who sometimes don’t, hopefully persuading them to take their litter home instead of leaving it in the countryside.”

Please keep an eye out for campaign initiatives and details regarding how you might get involved in events over the next few weeks.
